Participants bring Passion, Excitement and Motivation to the Case Competition Experience

By B Parrott

As the fall semester begins, graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in Zicklin are encouraged to get involved in campus life and participate in clubs, groups and special events that will enrich their college experience. There is no better opportunity for students to receive exposure to respected experts from business and industry, while showcasing skill and business acumen then through participation in Zicklin’s Case Competition Program.

This program complements the traditional college experience for business students who seek challenge, personal and professional development while attending Zicklin. Students have the opportunity to integrate academic skills and apply them to real life business challenges in a “moot court” like competitive environment. Team solutions are presented and judged by a panel of experts that might include entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, accountants or lawyers. Such competitions allow students to demonstrate their professionalism, business savvy and competitive spirit before an esteemed group of influential individuals.

For the past ten years Merrill Lynch has partnered with the Zicklin School of Business in a widely-respected competition held at the Field Center for Entrepreneurship at Baruch. Now a full spectrum of competitions is available for consideration. These include competitions that focus on accounting, marketing, and sustainability specialties. Students may compete to solve a long-standing business problem over the course of a semester. Or, they may compete by preparing 2 to 3 minute elevator speeches in which they present a synopsis of a new business plan.

The Case Competition Program is managed by Alan Rosenbloom, a part-time ReServist in the Zicklin Dean’s office. Alan comments that “Baruch is always looking at new ways to enhance learning opportunities. One of the ways is experiential learning which occurs through competing in a business case competition.”

Alan has just completed Zicklin’s new web page dedicated exclusively to the case competition program. The site incorporates

  • tips on competing in case competitions
  • benefits students will receive through participation
  • written and video testimonials from students who have participated in previous competitions
  • articles about recent successes
  • new competitions for students to consider
