Baruch College Study Abroad Summer 2011
Submitted by Richard Mitten, PhD, Director Baruch Study Abroad

“Global learning, or a phrase like it, has become one of the most pervasive watchwords in higher education today. And for good reason: in today's world of deeply intertwined global relationships, the ability to move easily within and between cultures is becoming not only an increasingly prized qualification for jobs in any number of fields, but has become an indispensable component of a college education in the twenty-first century. Cultural and ethnic diversity is, of course, nothing new to Baruch students: it is one of the distinguishing characteristics of our College, and one of which we are most proud. Yet, by studying abroad, Baruch students can build upon that local experience to enhance the kinds of intercultural skills sought by many employers today and to give them an important competitive advantage in the job market.

The Baruch College Study Abroad Office, part of the Weissman Center for International Business, assists students from all three Baruch Schools who wish to study abroad.”

A total of 105 Baruch College students studied abroad during the summer 2011 term. They studied in 28 different cities in 16 countries, ranging from Argentina to the United Kingdom. The most popular destinations for our students remained China, the choice of nearly 28 percent of those studying abroad, followed by Italy (25 percent) and Spain (16 percent). Continuing the pattern at Baruch, and roughly consistent with statistics for the country as a whole, over twice as many female students (68 percent) went abroad during the summer 2011 term than did male students (32 percent). Similarly, 98 percent of those studying abroad were undergraduates.

Two Baruch undergraduates, Tisha Fouzia and Jophy Lin, were among those to attend the first International Summer University at our partner school the Stockholm University School of Business.

Conchita Campos, a graduate student in the School of Public Affairs, received credit for an internship at the EI Campo School in San Carlos, Costa Rica. EI Campo provides instruction from preschool to sixth grade to 250 students from very low-income families in San Carlos. During her internship, Conchita had the opportunity to observe and assist teachers, as well as create and implement her own activities for the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten music and art classes.

A study abroad opportunity is available to all Baruch students. For application information and dates for regular Study Abroad fairs visit the Study Abroad web page.
